Consumer Financial Education
In our experience, widespread financial illiteracy is a significant concern among the majority of South Africans, as evident from market commentary in various media outlets, as well as our interactions. This issue is particularly acute within the farming community and Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SMME) owners, who often lack even a basic understanding of the financial tools that could help them minimize risks and maximize opportunities. In alignment with the broader efforts of the local government and business community, LuRhu is committed to empowering communities with the knowledge they need to make well-informed financial decisions.
Our initiatives primarily focus on the domestic market, South Africa, with aspirations to expand across the continent.
Ongoing educational campaigns, jointly led by LuRhu and other stakeholders, encompass the following key activities:
- Establishing a strong presence within the economically active sector by conducting financial literacy workshops in collaboration with employers to empower a broad spectrum of workers.
- Raising awareness among stokvels about the array of available investment products, facilitating diversification to optimize risk-adjusted returns, and ensuring stokvels can meet the short and long-term financial needs of their members.
- Educating smaller farming communities on investment and risk-reduction strategies through individual and group consultations.
- Offering guidance to Small and Medium Enterprises on diverse methods of obtaining financing to maximize their business potential, ensuring they have sufficient funds to sustain operations and cover expenses.
- Informing individuals about special issue shares, such as Sasol Inzalo and Asonge, and equipping them with the necessary knowledge to effectively manage and optimize their holdings.
